Below are the horses that are at SaddleHawk Ranch. Most are waiting to be sponsored under Equine Safe Haven. Sponsoring a horse also provides access to that horse for no charge for those that are in the disadvantaged program. Our annual budget comes from donations to support Equine Safe Haven, to ensure our programs remain FREE to our participants. You can make a donation online (clicking the donate button) or mail a check to Equine Safe Haven, 4930 Franklin Rd SE, Deming, NM 88030
All of these pictured were just days or hours away from being shipped to slaughter in Mexico. All were from the Bowie Texas Livestock kill pen. Some were saved with help from our partner, Border Horse Slaughter Rescue. We are blessed to have them, and they are looking forward to living their best second chance life!
We use these Equines to help people with certain disabilities. The Equines in our driving program, often help people that are disadvantaged. They help with physical strength, cognitive skills, and emotional support as well as give them something to look forward to.
Full sponsorship of a horse is $100 to 300 a month depending on their needs. This included all hay/feed, vaccinations and farrier care that may be needed. This also includes access for you to visit your sponsored horse during operating hours.
1/4 or 1/2 sponsorship! There are also opportunities to Sponsor a portion for that horse. You can start with committing to $20 a month! You are welcome to visit your sponsored equine anytime!
If you have an RV and are traveling, please come stay at the Ranch and visit with your sponsored equine. You can book your stay on www.saddlehawkranch.com
JoJo
JoJo started his racing career as a harness racer. His racing name is "Long Gone Joe", and he won a total of $63k at the track. He has some evidence of an injury that probably ended his racing career. He then was sold, and all we know is he spent about 16 years with the Amish. He is now 21 and he is very nibble and quick on his feet, easy to handle and loves people. He is a driver and is learning how to be ridden. It has taken a year to rehabilitate him to a good weight, and we treat his arthritis with joint supplements. He is a cousin to Ronin. They both have the same grandfathers on both sire & dam. The great Abercrombie, whose lifetime winnings totaled $948,391, was inducted into the Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 1999
CA$H
CA$H is our first horse purchased under Equine Safe Haven. He was purchased from 3 donors (cash) from the kill pen. He was a heavy equipment driving horse with the Amish, and we found him in the Texas kill pen. He was part of a driving team, but unfortunately his partner didn't make it. We picked him up and brought him home to the Ranch. He is our mascot and he loves to give rides to kids and adults of all ages. He is fit and able to pull our carriages and we look forward to having him in our events in 2025. CA$H is a huge Belgian and he eats a lot! He is looking for a Sponsor!
Thelma & Louise - sisters
Older driving mules
Color: Sorrel
Thelma and Louise cam from the Bowie Texas kill pen only hours from almost shipping to Mexico to be slaughtered. Once home at the ranch, we realized that Thelma may have some health issues, and Louise definitely was afraid of people. They had been with the Amish for most of their 20+ years of life, and so we have semi-retired them. Thelma & Louise will let you pet them, but they are shy and timid with people. Most likely there was some abuse in their past. They are looking for their forever homes, and can be adopted, to the right humans that understand Mules and their behavior.
Isabella
Dutch Harness Horse
Color: Black with 3 white stockings, and large blaze.
Amish bred and raised driving & riding horse.
"Izzy" is absolutely stunning to look at, and her trot is a dream. She is one of the newest horses saved from slaughter in October of 2023. She will get her teeth floated, and then start building up her muscles again, and hopefully will team up with Whiskey, the other Dutch Harness Horse we have. She will also be practicing for next years carriage show in AZ.
"Cappy" Cappuccino
Former X Harness Racer
Amish working horse
Color: Bay with one white sock on left rear
Birthday: May 14 1998
Cappy has a big personality, and is loving and gentle. He is a bit "night blind" but will follow his leader anywhere. He is not spooky and he thinks he is still in his teens. He is a driver. He is an easy keeper and gets along well with the other horses as long as they let him eat beside them. He would make a nice companion horse, or would be happy to have you all to himself.
Jenny is a super mom! She gave birth to little Louie on April 3, 2023. That happened to be Jennys' Humans' bday. Jenny has a human sponsor named Janet C, and they have a fantastic bond. It is amazing to see. Jenny has got to be the friendliest donkey ever. She is so sweet and we love her so much. Plus she is a good mommy. She has learned now to stand politely for Farrier, and has had multiple trims to correct her clubbed front hooves.
Thank you Janet!
Dinero
breed: Donkey
Dinero is a yearling donkey that was waiting to go to slaughter with the other 7 donkeys. We saved him, but he became very sick before he loaded onto the trailer. He was at the vet in Texas, in ICU for 3 weeks! He pulled through and now he is a healthy little guy, with so much love for kids and adults. He loves attention, scratches and of course kisses. Dinero will be needing a sponsor. He will be gelded in the fall, along with 3 others and the colt Dusty. He would be great to train for the famous "donkey dashes" races in Tombstone AZ and Colorado
Whiskey

Standardbred x harness track racer
Amish working horse
Driving horse only.
Color: Bay with left back white sock
Ronin is currently cared for under SaddleHawk Ranch, and donates his time to Equine Safe Haven, but looking for Parade Sponsorships since he is used in Parades. We would list your name/company name on a plaque for his buggy. Ronin's grandfather on both his sire and dam was the great Abercrombie, whose lifetime winnings totaled $948,391, was inducted into the Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 1999
Kona

Kahlua
age: between 15 and 18
dark brown and white pinto
Riding horse (trail)
Tricolor pinto - Black, White, Brown
Kahlua is quirky, no spookiness in him, and he is absolutely stunning. He is the only one at the ranch that will lick you first and then bite you for no reason. Kahlua is looking for a sponsor so he can get his teeth floated & medical care. He has some vices that need to be evaluated by a vet.
Latte
age: 11 -12
Mule
Color: Sorrel
Latte was found in the Texas kill pen, and had papers from an owner in North Carolina. She is a riding mule. Her previous owner had no idea she was only days away from slaughter, and none of us understand why she was there. She is wonderful to work with. She is looking for a sponsor
Dusty - Son of Sandy. Dusty is colt, born June 25, 2022.
Color: Cream Palomino
Sandy, his mother was rescued from a Texas kill pen, while heavily bred. She had Dusty and he has grown up at the Ranch. Dusty will need to be gelded in the fall/winter of 2023 and needs a sponsor
Sandy, mother of Dusty.
Color: Cream Palomino
Sandy was a brood mare and was rescued from the Texas kill pen. She was only days away from being shipped to slaughter. 3 days after she was pulled out of the kill pen she gave birth at the vets to Dusty. She is not trained or halter broke, so she will need a lot of training. She is beautiful and she needs a sponsor
This little guy was born on April 3, 2023 and is the Ranch favorite. He is the first baby born at the Ranch, and is fully cared for by Equine Safe Haven and a few generous Godparents. Lynn G is sponsoring him, and he gets treated like a Prince. He will need to be gelded in the fall/winter of 2023
Aston
breed: Donkey
Aston is one of the oldest donkeys at the Ranch. We think he is in his 30's. He was saved from going to slaughter.
He is still a little afraid of people, but he eventually will come up for scratches and rubs. His friend is Martin, and they are looking for Sponsors
This is Smith and Wesson (aka Chewy)
breed: Donkey
both of these young donkeys were saved from going to Mexico to slaughter. They are looking for Sponsors!
This is Butch and Sundance
breed: Donkey
These two young donkeys are so lovable. Sundance is especially friendly and likes to take walks with you at sunset. We think he may be the father of Louie. All 8 of these donkeys were saved from slaughter. Our Jenny had come to the Ranch pregnant and she gave birth to baby
Louie on April 3, 2023
Butch and Sundance are looking for Sponsors!
